James Garrard

James Garrad was born on 20 July 1829 in Wickham Skeith, the son of Robert's younger brother, Samuel and his wife Maria Harriett Barrell.

In the "Bound for South Australia Collection", we find reference to James Garrod, aged 21, departed Plymouth, England, 24 April 1851 aboard the "Sultana", arriving in Adelaide on 8 August 1851. His occupation was listed as agricultural labourer.

James spent time in Adelaide before moving to Black Springs in the Clare Valley. On 4 November 1854, he married Susan Turner in Kapunda. James and Susan had at least 5 sons and 6 daughters, setting a firm foundation for a large number of descendants in the South Australian community.

In 1885, James is listed in several Insolvency proceedings with the notation of "James Garrard usually known as James Reid".

Susan passed away in Yongala on 10 July 1895, with the Death Notice in the South Australian Chronicle stating

GARRARD. On the 10th of July. at Yongala. Susan, the beloved wife of James Garrard, leaving a sorrowing husband, five sons, six daughters and 45 grandchildren to mourn their loss...

James died in Yongala on 11 January 1905 and is buried in the Yongala cemetery.

Family descendants on this line have continued the practice of multiple spellings of the family surname to include Garrard, Garrad and Garad.
