The Eleventh Child

In 1986, on a visit to Australia from New Zealand, Tui Radley, wife of Emma Garrad's grandson, Kenneth Garnett advised me that her family were holding a family bible which had been the property of Emma Garrad and had been passed down through the family. In that bible was a loose paper annotated "Walter lived 2 days", maybe something that Robert had verbally passed on to Emma who was 21 at the time of her fatherr's death.

Robert and Sarah were married in October 1826 and their first recorded child was Mary Ann born March 1829. It is unlikely that Sarah would not have fallen pregnant till mid 1828 and we can theorise that Walter was born to Robert and Sarah in Narellan NSW about1827.

Giving further weight to this theory, Robert's first male child (Robert) John Garrad born in 1837 named a son Walter Henry Garrad, who in turn named his son Walter Leslie Garrad, who in turn named his son Walter Ellis Milton Garrad. these "Walters" were known as Henry, Leslie and Milton respectively. Perhaps the silent Walter as a Mark of respect to the infant child of Robert and Sarah.
